It’s a tough job playing a character known for his emotionlessness, made tougher when he’s also appointed the shepherd to a storied fantasy universe. The mutant Aragorn is all gruff speech, dadly stubble, and exciting swordplay. It’s all he’s good for it’s all he was made to do. Henry Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia, a Witcher, roams far and wide killing monsters for bounties. Stars: Henry Cavill, Freya Allan, Eamon Farren, Anya Chalotra, Joey Batey And while Joe doesn’t seem to evolve as quickly as the show around him, he remains a compelling narrator and one of the most interesting characters on TV. Full of twists and turns you’ll never see coming, the blood-soaked thriller-which originated on Lifetime before moving to Netflix beginning in Season 2-has evolved to become a perfectly orchestrated social satire, with Joe going up against pretentious hipsters in Brooklyn (Season 1), wellness gurus in Los Angeles (Season 2), and fully-optimized techies in a fictional Silicon Valley suburb (Season 3). What started out as a clever serial killer/stalker drama about deconstructing “nice guy” tropes and seemingly romantic overtures, You has upped its game each and every season to reveal it’s more than just a show about a man (Penn Badgley’s Joe Goldberg) who regularly gets away with murder. Never before has a series delighted this much in pulling the rug out from under its viewers. Stars: Penn Badgley, Elizabeth Lail, Luca Padovan, Zach Cherry, Shay Mitchell This is not fun watching-it’s mostly horrifying-but even if our brave new world is inescapable, the show represents a kind of protest that feels more necessary than ever. The title is nearly perfect, as explained by creator Charlie Brooker: “The black mirror of the title is the one you’ll find on every wall, on every desk, in the palm of every hand: the cold, shiny screen of a TV, a monitor, a smartphone.” The job of this show is to reflect our society in an unflattering light, and they do it with a new cast and a new story in each episode. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth questioning, which is exactly what Black Mirror is all about. The ubiquity of technology is a reality that we can’t fight against, and to maintain our sanity, we have to accept it. But the worst part is, we’re complicit-we’ve accepted the intrusion, and in some cases, or even most cases, we’ve become addicted. The way it curbs our freedom, diminishes our privacy, and subjects us to anonymous attacks can feel like an unforgivable violation. There are probably times in most of our lives when we see our technological world as more of a dystopia than a utopia. Stars: Bryce Dallas Howard, Malachi Kirby, Gugu Mbatha-Raw Honorable Mention: Lady Dynamite, Aggretsuko, Neo Yokio, Jessica Jones 30. Worthy titles from that category (many of which come from the UK) include Bodyguard, Derry Girls, Sex Education, The End of the F-ing World, The Great British Baking Show, Giri/Haji, and Anne with an E.īelow are the top 30 Netflix original series, as voted on by the Paste TV Editors and writers, a list which is not about what’s important, but about what we actually watch and love to recommend: But since those rights can change, and Netflix didn’t actually make these series, we have excluded them from the list below. But whereas its library of other TV shows may move and disappear month to month, these Netflix originals aren’t going anywhere.Ī note one methodology: Netflix brands a ton of TV shows as “originals” now, even though they did not, in fact, produce those series-they just have exclusive international distribution rights. Now, Netflix seems to drop a new TV show more or less every week, which is a lot to handle. But Netflix’s original series have also come a long way since the platform began launching its own TV shows (like House of Cards and Orange Is the New Black), as well as “saving” or extending popular series from other networks (like Arrested Development). Netflix has a ton of great TV series-in fact, we have ranked 100 of them here.
